-게 되다

Come to / End up: V + 게 되다

Shows that a situation changed or turned out a certain way, often regardless of one's own will.

Explanation

-게 되다 shows that you came to do something, or that a state changed, because of circumstances or someone else's decision rather than your own choice. For a change that has already happened, say -게 됐어요 (되었어요). Koreans also use it for their own decisions to sound modest and soft, especially when sharing news. It is also used for gradual changes, such as becoming able to do something you couldn't do before.

How to form it

  • Verb stem + 게 되다

    가다 → 가 + 게 되다 → 가게 되다

  • A change that already happened: stem + 게 됐어요

    알다 → 알게 됐어요

  • A change expected in the future: stem + 게 될 거예요

    좋아하다 → 좋아하게 될 거예요
