-이에요/예요

To be: N + 이에요/예요

Attached to a noun to say 'is/am/are' in a polite, friendly way.

Explanation

이에요/예요 is the polite informal form of 이다 ('to be') and is used to say what someone or something is. Use 이에요 after a noun that ends in a consonant (받침) and 예요 after a noun that ends in a vowel. With rising intonation, the same form becomes a question. For the negative, say N + 이/가 아니에요.

  • Noun ending in a consonant + 이에요

    학생 + 이에요 → 학생이에요

  • Negative: Noun + 이/가 아니에요

    학생 + 이 아니에요 → 학생이 아니에요
